I recently attending a truly life-changing retreat led by the One Idea Away team. One of the many enlightening exercises we participated in was completing the following phrase:
“I become _____ when I let go of _____.”
We were invited to journal our thoughts based on that prompt for a few minutes. I expected that I’d scribble down a few phrases and enjoy the experience, as I had the other parts of the weekend.
Within 10 minutes, I had written four pages with this phrase repeated.
Each line revealed a new thought, a new concept.
I’d love to share a few of the phrases I wrote that day:
I become powerful when I let go of controlling outcomes
I become enlightened when I let go of focus & trying
I become beautiful when I let go of what it means to be beautiful
I become a force when I let go of my grip
I become a refuge when I let go a feeling safe
I become pain-free when I let go of suffering
I become healthy when I let go of sickness
I become angry when I let go of love
I become scared when I let go of surrender
I become exhausted when I let go of energy
I become a better athlete when I let go of winning
I become a true partner when I let go of helping
I become accepting when I let go of judgement
I become my true self when I let of what I wanted to be
I become wiser when I let go of expectations
I become free when I let go of what it means to be free.
At the end of this exercise, I found myself sitting on a chair, holding my journal and crying. They were not tears of sadness but rather tears of profound joy and insight. I realized, looking over those four pages, that I become something when I let go of its opposite. This was deep, powerful understanding that I am still – days later – still seeking to process all the insights.
So, I invite you to try this same exercise. Take out a piece of paper, open a blank page on your laptop, grab some scratch paper. Write the prompt at the top of your page. Take three deep breaths to center yourself, creating an awareness of each inhale and exhale, closing your eyes if this helps or maintaining a soft focus.
Then complete the sentence. Write whatever phrases come to mind, even if it seems silly or doesn’t make sense. Resist the urge to self-edit and let the ideas flow.
Pick your favorites, the ones that spoke most powerfully to you, and revisit them each day for a week.
What does this tell you about how you show up in life? What do you want to incorporate into your life going forward?
As always, thank you for reading! Keep making your special brand of magic because the world needs you and your gifts.
